SP-404MKII synth patcher

Adds a Sound Generator, 13 synthesized drum kits and new pad and effect tools to Roland's SP-404MKII firmware. DOOM OS is included. Your firmware is patched in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

Drop in Roland's original SP404MKII_APP1.bin (firmware ) and press Patch firmware. A file that is already patched, or another firmware version, is refused.

Earlier versions had two hidden effect settings that could make the sound suddenly very loud: the Compressor's MODE and the Super Filter's settings. Both are removed. Still, keep your volume low when you try hidden effect settings.

What you get

Sound Generator and drum kits

  • Sound Generator

A four-voice synth with 17 added waves, envelope presets, 34 scales and an arpeggiator.

    SHIFT + RECORD SETTING

  • Drum kits

13 drum machines, synthesized on the SP: TR-808, TR-909, CR-78, TR-707 and more.

    SHIFT + PATTERN EDIT

  • MIDI

Play the synth and the kits from a sequencer. Notes 36–51 play pads 1–16; CCs reach every knob.

Set the channel with M.CH in the VALUE menu

  • Kit to sample bank

Write the current kit, with each pad's settings, into the 16 pads of a sample bank.

    BOUNC in the VALUE menu

Pads

  • Bounce in place

Turn a pad's sound, with its effects, into a new sample. Choose whether to keep the echo or reverb tail.

Hold RESAMPLE, tap the pad, tap where it goes, press RESAMPLE

  • Pad envelopes

Attack, hold and release with curves, a pitch sweep and a filter, for each pad.

SHIFT + PITCH/SPEED, then turn VALUE

  • Note repeat

A held pad repeats in time with the tempo. Tap ROLL to keep it on, HOLD to keep a pad repeating.

Hold ROLL and a pad; turn VALUE for the speed

  • Chromatic scales

34 scales and a key in chromatic mode, and the pads reach an octave higher.

Hold and turn VALUE; add SHIFT for the key

  • SUB PAD on the Sound Generator

Plays the last pad again, in melodic and drum mode.

    SUB PAD

Effects

  • Hidden effect settings

Extra settings the SP keeps hidden, such as Tape Echo's tape distortion. Your edits stay after you turn the SP off.

An FX button, then VALUE for each page; CTRL 1–3 change them

  • Hidden settings on and off

Switch every hidden setting off to hear the effects as on a stock SP, and on again for your edits.

    Hold HOLD and press VALUE

  • Input FX hidden settings

The same for the input FX, such as the Gt Amp Sim's cabinets and mic position.

Hold VALUE and press EXT SOURCE

Always on

  • DOOM OS

The pattern sequencer, included in the firmware this patcher makes.

Hold REMAIN and press SUB PAD

  • Saved with the project

Kits, the MIDI channel, the arpeggiator, envelopes, the scale and the synth's settings come back after a restart.

  • Faster start-up

The SP goes straight to the main screen, about 4 seconds sooner.

  • Cleaner resampling

A resampled sample starts right at its first sound.

Install it

  1. Back up your samples and projects. Keep Roland's original 5.52 update so you can go back.
  2. Patch the original SP404MKII_APP1.bin above and download the result.
  3. Put it on the SD card with the unchanged original SP404MKII_APP0.bin.
  4. Hold SHIFT while you turn the SP on, then press VALUE to update.

I already have DOOM OS, or an older version of this mod. Can I install this?

Yes. Patch the file as above, then run the normal update on your SP. Whatever your SP runs now (the original firmware, DOOM OS or an older version of this mod), the update replaces it.

Which file do I need?

Roland’s original firmware 5.52 update, on your computer: SP404MKII_APP1.bin and SP404MKII_APP0.bin. Load the APP1 file into the patcher. It won’t take a file that is already patched, or another firmware version. Your SP doesn’t need the original firmware installed first.

How do I go back to the original firmware?

Run the same update with Roland’s original 5.52 files (SP404MKII_APP1.bin and SP404MKII_APP0.bin). Your projects and samples stay.

Will I lose my work?

No. Updating the firmware doesn’t erase your projects or samples, but back up before any update anyway. Projects you make with this firmware still open on the original firmware or DOOM OS; the extra settings are just ignored there. If you have a newer DOOM OS than 0.6.1, this takes you back to DOOM OS 0.6.1: your projects and samples stay, but settings or patterns from the newer DOOM OS might not carry over.

More detail

Sound Generator

Four live voices, 17 added waves, nine envelope and filter presets, 34 scales and an arpeggiator.

Drum kits

TR-808, DR-110, KPR-77, Lel' UDS, TR-909, TR-606, SDS-V, Mini Pops 7, CR-78, CR-8000, TR-707, TR-727 and a DX-style FM kit. Play them over MIDI, bounce them into a bank, resample or loop them.

DOOM OS

Klangfeld Labs' pattern sequencer: step and piano-roll editing, a mixer and automation. Included unchanged (0.6.1, build ED5E); see the DOOM OS quickstart.

Sound Generator and drum kits

Envelope presets (ENV)

In the Sound Generator, choose ENV, then play a new note to hear the selected preset. Each voice takes its envelope when the note starts.

  • OFF: stock behavior, no added envelope.
  • Pluck / Perc: fast attack and decay to silence; Perc has the longer decay.
  • Keys: fast attack, quieter held level and a release tail.
  • Pad / Swell: soft fade-in and long release; Swell is slower.
  • Bass / Acid: volume plus a closing resonant low-pass filter; Acid has stronger resonance/drive and a shorter release.
  • Sweep / FPad: volume plus slow filter movement; Sweep opens slowly, FPad has a softer volume attack and long release.
Scales and MIDI IN

Set SCALE to anything other than Chrom and the 16 pads play only that scale's notes, one scale step per pad, from the bottom row (lowest) to the top row (highest). The 34 choices include Lydian, Mixolydian, Locrian, blues, bebop, harmonic and melodic minor, whole tone, diminished, Gypsy and Romanian minor, Spanish, Bhairav, Marva, Purvi, Todi, Arabic, Egyptian, Chinese, Pelog, Hirajoshi, Miyakobushi and Ryukyu.

MIDI IN plays all four voices, with the same voice stealing as the pads; a held MIDI note lights the pad with the same pitch.

Arpeggiator

Five items follow TUNE in the Sound Generator VALUE menu; use them like the others (move to the item, enter edit, turn).

  • ARP: OFF, UP, DOWN, UP&DN, RAND, ORDER (the order you pressed the keys), CHORD (all held notes every step).
  • RATE: 1/4, 1/4T, 1/8, 1/8T, 1/16 (default), 1/16T, 1/32 of a beat.
  • A.OCT: -3..+3, also plays the held notes that many octaves below or above.
  • HOLD: latch; the arp keeps going after you let go.
  • BPM: read-only, the tempo the arp plays at.

With ARP on, pads and MIDI IN feed the arp instead of playing directly. Drum mode and melodic mode each keep their own arpeggiator settings.

Drum kits

SHIFT + PATTERN EDIT, on the main screen or in the Sound Generator, opens drum mode with the last kit you used; SHIFT + RECORD SETTING returns to the melodic Sound Generator. The 13 kits are TR808, DR110, KPR77, UDS, FM, TR909, TR606, SDS-V, MP-7, CR78, CR8K, TR707 and TR727. Every sound is synthesized on the SP; no samples are used.

  • Pads: each kit fills all 16 pads. Pads beyond a machine's own voices hold tuned or reshaped variants, shown with a + after the sound name. Strike a pad to select it for editing.
  • Knobs: CTRL1 Tune (±12 semitones), CTRL2 Decay, CTRL3 Tone. Tap SHIFT for Sweep, Noise and Attack; tap again to go back. Tune at 0 and the others at 50 play the machine's own sound.
  • Change a pad's sound: hold the pad and turn VALUE to step through that machine's sounds.
  • VALUE menu: ARP, RATE, HOLD and BPM (a readout), then KIT, PAD, SOUND and LEVEL (0–127), then M.CH (the MIDI channel) and BOUNC. KIT steps through the 13 machines.
  • REC: play, press REC, choose a pad (it blinks), then press REC again. It records the last pad you hit plus up to three others hit within 100 ms before it, each with its own timing and velocity. The recording runs until the last drum has rung out (at least 21 ms, at most 10 s).
  • BOUNC (the kit into a sample bank): turn VALUE to BOUNC, press VALUE, turn to a bank (A–J), press VALUE. An empty bank fills at once with the kit's 16 pads. A bank with samples asks once: FILL keeps them and fills the empty pads, OVER replaces them all; then SURE? (NO or YES). EXIT stops it.
  • Resample and looper: on the RESAMPLE screen (take armed) or the LOOPER screen, SHIFT + PATTERN EDIT opens the kits. With the looper on, REC on the Sound Generator screen records the loop.

The arpeggiator also runs in drum mode and steps through the held pads; A.OCT applies only to melodic mode. Kit edits are saved with the project.

MIDI

It works while the Sound Generator is open, in drum (kits) or melodic mode, and stops when you leave that screen.

  • Channel: M.CH, in the VALUE menu of both modes (1–16, default 16), is the channel the Sound Generator plays. Channel 16 is also the SP's control channel, so for sequencing a free channel such as 11–15 avoids triggering SP functions when you leave the Sound Generator.
  • Drum notes: 36–51 play pads 1–16 (36 = pad 1, the kick in most kits); other notes are ignored.
  • Drum CCs: three per pad, in the order Tune, Decay, Level. Pads 1–4 use CC 20–31, pads 5–12 use 40–63 and pads 13–16 use 102–113. The last pad heard takes Tone 114, Sweep 115, Noise 116 and Attack 117. CC 64 is the knob centre.
  • Synth CCs: TYPE 70, FREQ 71, LEVEL 72, DUTY 73, BALANCE 74, ENV 75, TUNE 76.
  • Arpeggiator CCs: ARP 33, RATE 34, A.OCT 35 (melodic only), HOLD 36.
  • Panic: CC 123 releases notes held by MIDI and stops the arp. CC 120 also fades out every Sound Generator voice.

CC changes are saved with the project. Full chart: KITS_MIDI.md.

Pads

Bounce in place
  1. Hold RESAMPLE and tap the pad.
  2. Tap where the new sample goes: the same pad to replace it (the original moves to an empty pad), or an empty pad to put the new sample there. The pad you picked lights up. A pad that already has a sample says PAD NOT EMPTY.
  3. Turn VALUE to choose NO TAIL (stop when the sound ends) or TAIL (keep the echo or reverb until it fades out).
  4. Press RESAMPLE to record.

To undo a replace: hold RESAMPLE, tap that pad, press VALUE, then press RESAMPLE.

Pad envelopes

SHIFT + PITCH/SPEED opens them. Turn VALUE (or tap SHIFT) for the next page; CTRL 1–3 change the three settings on it. Each pad keeps its own. Hold COPY while you turn to change the pad's whole mute group, or REMAIN for the whole bank. To put a pad back to normal, press DEL on these pages, then VALUE.

  • 1 AMP: ATTACK, HOLD, RELEASE. Press VALUE here for finer timing (FINE).
  • 2 SHAPE: the attack and release curves: LIN, EXP, LOG or S.
  • 3 DECAY: DECAY time, SUSTAIN level and the decay's curve.
  • 4 MODE: LOOP (shape every pass of a looping pad, or only the first), RETRIG (CUT, or a fade so a re-hit doesn't click) and REVERSE (MIRROR or TIME).
  • 5 PITCH: a pitch sweep: DEPTH (±24 semitones), ATTACK, DECAY.
  • 6 FILTER: TYPE (off, low-pass, band-pass or high-pass), CUTOFF, RESO.
  • 7 F-ENV: the filter's sweep: AMOUNT (±9.9 octaves), ATTACK, DECAY.
  • 8 CURVES: the pitch and filter sweeps' curves.
Note repeat (rolls)
  • Roll: hold ROLL and a pad, and the pad repeats in time with the tempo.
  • Speed: turn VALUE while you hold ROLL (or while a latched pad repeats). It steps through 1/2, 3/8, 1/2T, 1/4, 3/16, 1/4T, 1/8, 3/32, 1/8T, 1/16, 3/64, 1/16T, 1/32, 1/32T, 1/64 and 1/64T. The new speed starts at once, and the screen shows it, for example Roll 1/16T.
  • Latch: tap ROLL on its own. ROLL lights, and any pad you hold repeats. Tap ROLL again to switch it off.
  • Keep rolling: press HOLD while pads roll, and they keep going after you let go. Hit the pad again, press HOLD again or press EXIT + ROLL to stop.
  • Stop everything: EXIT + ROLL.
  • Stop one pad: hold EXIT and press a rolling pad. That pad stops; the others keep going.
  • START/END and PITCH/SPEED: ROLL works as it normally does there: on START/END, hold it to hear the end of the sample; on PITCH/SPEED it opens Groove. If the latch is on, it waits until you leave.
  • Chromatic mode: each pad keeps its own speed (1/16 to start).
Chromatic mode
  • Scale: hold VALUE and turn it to choose one of the Sound Generator's 34 scales. A quick press steps to the next one. The screen names each.
  • Key: hold SHIFT as well and turn VALUE.
  • Pads: every pad plays the next note of the scale, and the range reaches an octave higher than stock (up to +27 semitones).
  • Rolls: each pad keeps its own roll speed.
  • Clicks: if a pad clicks when it plays again over itself (rolls, fast notes), give that pad a short RETRIG fade (pad envelopes, page 4).

Effects

Hidden effect settings: the full list

On BUS 1–4: press an FX button, then VALUE. The effect screen stays up, and each VALUE press shows the next page. For the input FX: hold VALUE and press EXT SOURCE, then press VALUE for each page. CTRL 1–3 change the three settings on a page; any button except VALUE and SHIFT closes it. Your edits are kept when you turn the SP off. Hold HOLD and press VALUE, on any screen, to switch them all off (the effects sound as on a stock SP) and on again; the SP shows HIDDEN FX OFF or HIDDEN FX ON. Gains, EQ boosts, feedback and resonance can make the sound loud, so keep your volume low.
