DOOM OS Quickstart

Every DOOM OS control on one page. Anything not listed works as it always does on the SP-404MK2.

Open DOOM OS

HoldREMAIN+pressSUB PAD

Works from any screen of the box. EXIT closes it.

Your first pattern

  1. Hold REMAIN and press SUB PAD. DOOM OS opens.
  2. Hold PATTERN SELECT and press an empty pattern pad.
  3. Hold SUB PAD, tap pads to listen, and let go on the sound you want. That is your first track.
  4. Tap pads to set steps. Press PATTERN SELECT to play.
  5. Shape the notes with the CTRL knobs.
  6. Hold SUB PAD again for the next sound.
RECORD SETTING opens the track panel, where turning VALUE walks the rows; pressed again it opens the pattern panel, where VALUE changes the tempo; pressed a third time it closes.
Press RECORD SETTING once for the track panel, twice for the pattern panel, a third time to close. Turn VALUE to choose a row, press it to change the value.

The CTRL knobs

CTRL 1 CTRL 2 CTRL 3 edit notes. Turn one and every note on the selected track takes its value. Hold a step's pad while you turn and only that note changes.

Turn VALUE to pick the track, then turn a knob.

The step grid with track A9 selected. Turning CTRL 2 makes every note on the track longer, from one step to four.
CTRL 1Same velocity for every note
CTRL 2Same length for every note
CTRL 3Same nudge for every notethe middle puts every note exactly on its step

Hold the note's pad and turn a knob.

Pad 9 held on track A9. The top line shows VEL 90, LEN and MIC. Turning CTRL 2 makes that one note longer while the others stay the same.
CTRL 1Velocity
CTRL 2Lengthan eighth of a step up to a whole bar
CTRL 3Nudgeearly or late; the middle is on the grid
SHIFT+CTRL 1Pitchup to 12 semitones up or down

Every note gets the same value

With no pad held, the knob sets every note on the track to the same value. For example:

  • CTRL 1All hits of a hi-hat at the same velocity.
  • CTRL 2All stabs the same length, short or long.
  • CTRL 3All notes the same distance off the grid. In the middle, every note is exactly on its step.

While you hold a pad the top line shows that note: VEL velocity, LEN length in steps, MIC nudge.

Hands free: hold the pad and press REMAIN. The note stays selected after you let go; press REMAIN again to release it.

Went too far? SHIFT+PATTERN SELECT undoes the whole turn.

Views

SHIFT+RECORD SETTING steps through five views of the grid. In the zoomed view, REMAIN+turn VALUE zooms out. SHIFT+turn VALUE goes to the next bar, or the next beat in the zoomed view. While a pattern plays the grid follows it from bar to bar; SHIFT+HOLD keeps it on the bar you picked, and again follows.

SHIFT + RECORD SETTING steps the grid through GRID, LABELS, BEATS, BOTH and ZOOM, each named over the header; REMAIN + turning VALUE zooms out to one bar and two bars; one more press goes back to the grid.

Piano roll

Press VALUE to open the selected track as a piano roll. Hold a step's pad and press another pad as a key: pad 5 is the sound's own pitch, pads 1 to 4 go down, pads 6 to 16 go up. Press VALUE again to close it.

The bass track opens as a piano roll; with pad 8 held, pad 10 and then pad 12 move its note up 5 and 7 semitones; closed again, the note carries a mark above it.

Recording

REC once rehearses: the pads play and nothing is recorded. REC again records, and EXIT stops. HOLD turns the pads into normal pads to play along. The record mode, SINGLE, MULTI or CHROMATIC, is in the pattern panel and on a shortcut. SHIFT+pad 9 sets the metronome: ON clicks while you rehearse and record, RECPLAY whenever the pattern plays, OFF.

RECORD SETTING twice, turn VALUE to REC, press VALUE.

RECORD SETTING twice opens the pattern panel; VALUE turns to REC and its presses step the mode to SINGLE and MULTI; the panel closes, then REC rehearses, REC records and EXIT stops.

SHIFT+REC while rehearsing or recording.

REC shows REHEARSAL, SHIFT + REC switches the mode to MULTI, REC again records while the pattern plays, EXIT stops.

Pattern tools

PATTERN EDIT shows eight tools. Turn VALUE to pick one and press it to open it, then turn to choose and press to apply; EXIT leaves it as it was. Tap a track's pad first to work on that track only. SHIFT+PATTERN EDIT opens the settings for new notes.

PATTERN EDIT opens the tools; VALUE opens QUANT, EXIT closes it; a turn selects SWING and VALUE opens it; PATTERN EDIT goes back to the grid; SHIFT + PATTERN EDIT opens NEW NOTES.

Mixer

In the track panel, turn VALUE to MIXER and press it. Turn VALUE to select a track.

CTRL 1 pan, CTRL 2 bus, CTRL 3 level.

The three CTRL knobs above the screen. The track panel's MIXER opens with VALUE and VALUE selects A6; CTRL 1 turns its pan to the left, CTRL 2 sets its bus to B2 and CTRL 3 raises its level from 83 to 115.

Press VALUE for pan, bus or level, and turn it a step at a time.

In the mixer, VALUE selects A6; its presses pick pan, bus and level in turn and its turns change each; SHIFT + RECORD SETTING shows the levels dithered.

Automation

SHIFT+MARK shows the pattern's effect moves: a row for each effect, a column for each knob. Press VALUE to see one knob across the bar, tap a pad for a step and turn VALUE to change it. SHIFT+turn VALUE goes to the next effect.

SHIFT + MARK opens the matrix; VALUE opens the isolator's LOW knob across the bar; a pad selects a step; VALUE goes back; SHIFT + a turn moves to the next effect; SHIFT + MARK goes back to the grid.

Help

Hold SHIFT for three seconds. Then press any button, pad or knob to see what it does; nothing plays or changes. EXIT leaves help.

SHIFT held for three seconds, and the help screen it opens: press any button or pad, turn VALUE or CTRL 1 to 3, and see what it does here; nothing is changed.
